TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol – The Province of Bohol is steadily positioning itself as a premier destination for major running events, buoyed by its scenic landscapes, strong community support, and growing track record of successfully hosting large-scale races.

Veteran race director Joel Juarez of Coco Running, who has organized races across the Philippines and abroad, highlighted Bohol’s unique appeal as a race destination.

According to Juarez, Bohol offers more than just a race venue, it delivers an experience. He cited the province’s picturesque routes, particularly those that pass through heritage areas and coastal roads, as a major draw for participants.

The combination was evident during the recently held OceanJet Run in Tagbilaran City on May 1, 2026, which drew enthusiastic participation and positive feedback from runners across the region.

During this event, the route included the stretch from Plaza Rizal and the Tagbilaran City Cathedral, then to the coastal town of Baclayon, where Bohol’s oldest church is located.

This race route allowed runners to pass through iconic landmarks, including the Blood Compact Shrine, and a breathtaking view of the Tagbilaran Bay.

“The runners were amazed. The route is beautiful, and it’s not something you see in typical city runs,” Juarez shared, recalling feedback from participants.

“It’s even more special during the fiesta season. You feel the festive energy along the roads, with banderitas and communities celebrating,” he added.

Beyond aesthetics, Bohol’s strong support system has become one of its defining strengths. Juarez emphasized the role of local government units, barangays, and volunteers in ensuring the success and safety of each race.

“The marshals here are very hospitable. They greet runners, cheer them on, and are very visible along the route. You can really feel the support,” he said.

He also noted the coordinated efforts of the Philippine National Police, medical teams, disaster risk reduction units, and traffic enforcers, which contribute to a safe race environment, especially with early morning race schedules that minimize traffic disruptions.

“It’s very organized. Every corner is manned, and safety is clearly a priority. For me as a race director, that’s very important,” Juarez added.

The event added to a growing list of races held in Bohol, signaling greater confidence among organizers and brands in the province’s ability to stage high-quality running events.

In recent months, Bohol has hosted or lined up several notable running events, including the Grab Run, upcoming mall-organized races, and community-led initiatives such as the Rotary Run in Tubigon.

Major establishments like Island City Mall are also preparing their own events, further strengthening the province’s running calendar.

Juarez noted that Coco Running has introduced upgraded race standards in Bohol, bringing in logistics and production elements commonly seen in international and metropolitan races.

“We invested in high-quality race setups, from the starting line to the finish. Even first-time participants are amazed by the experience. It’s something we’ve seen abroad and in major cities, and now we’re bringing that level here,” he said.

The growing interest from private companies is another promising sign. Juarez encouraged more businesses in Bohol to explore fun runs as a platform for promotion, community engagement, and a wellness lifestyle.

“Fun runs offer long media mileage. Promotions can start months before the event, and if the experience is positive, it stays with participants. It’s also a way to promote a healthy lifestyle while generating returns through participation,” he explained.

With its combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and reliable event support systems, Bohol is emerging as a strong contender for destination races in the Philippines.

Organizers are already in talks with various brands to mount more large-scale events in the province.

As momentum continues to build, Bohol’s roads, lined with history, hospitality, and vibrant community spirit, may soon become a regular stage for some of the country’s biggest and most anticipated running events.
